Each week I am going to write a short (under 200 word) review for an album from my collection chosen at random by iTunes. You can expect anything from Slayer to Salmonella Dub to (Ravi) Shankar and that is all part of the fun. Enjoy.
Week 9: Soulfly – Soulfly (1998)
Country: Brazil-USA / Metal, Nu-Metal, World
Considering its history it should be no surprise that this debut album from Max Cavalera’s new / current band feels like a logical follow on from Sepultura’s Roots (one of my all-time favourite metal albums). ‘Eye For An Eye’ is a typical Cavalera thrasher to start the record with a touch of Brazilian tribal madness which would become the band’s signature sound. Soulfly also kick started Max’s penchant for unusual musical cameos (how many metal albums would get Sean Lennon to feature like Primitive did?). This unfortunately comes in the form of Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst on ‘Bleed’. Oh well, you can’t win them all. Durst’s contribution is balanced out by members of Deftones and Fear Factory to give the album back some of its credibility. ‘The Song Remains Insane’ is one of the band’s heaviest tracks and it still hits as hard today as it did in ’98. Soulfly is a great starting point for a band that would go on to make many great albums and some killer classic tunes along the way.
Rating: A-
For fans of: Sepultura, Fear Factory, Slipknot
